These days, it’s become the norm to hear artists say “F*** The Industry” hasn’t it? More recently, NBA YoungBoy released a song where he’s taking shots at Drake, Lil Yachty, J. Cole, J. Prince, etc. YB dissing people is nothing new, however what needs to be examined a bit more is the growing trend of an artist being “too industry”. What do artists really mean when they make that claim?
We’ve seen examples throughout the years of artists like Russ, Chance The Rapper, Joe Budden, Nipsey Hussle, LaRussell, etc. embody and wave the flag for independent artists. But are the artists you think are independent truly indie? Is it to an artist's benefit to appear like they are anti-industry for marketing and branding purposes? Let's discuss.
